The Ford Explorer was introduced in 1991 as a modern SUV with hopes to follow after the Ford Bronco’s success. It replaced the outgoing Bronco II in Ford’s lineup, but the “Explorer” nameplate had previously been used by Ford in past releases. This was during Ford’s limited release under the F-series, called the Explorer Special and again as a trim under the Ford Ranger. Spanning six model generations, the Explorer SUV is one of Ford’s most successful models and is considered a pioneer of the midsize SUV market segment.
The 2025 Ford Explorer was introduced in the first half of 2024 and boasts a refreshed lineup comprising four different models and two EcoBoost engine options. The 2024 Explorer is still as great as any new SUV in the market, also featuring two powertrain options:
Rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations are also available, with Timberline exclusive to 4WD.
